Anne Arundel County's Bureau of Watershed Protection and Restoration (BWPR) retrofitted a recently completed sand filter by tilling in biochar provided through the Scaling Up Biochar project. The facility is located at the Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum, MD, and is part of a multi-cell treatment train for urban stormwater runoff. The installation was completed in August of 2024 and no monitoring has been performed other than routine post-construction SWM facility inspections.
The application of the biochar product was very labor intensive, but fortunately the material was lightweight and easily spread throughout the area. The power harrow thoroughly mixed the biochar into the existing base better than expected. This attachment for the skid steer would be a must in any future applications of this product. Respiratory and eye protection would also be advised during application due to the consistency of the product.
